Sports badges: Enhancing cohesion and a sense of belonging
Sports badges: Enhancing cohesion and a sense of belonging
Foreword
A sports badge is a decorative item or souvenir used to express passion and identification with a sport. It can not only showcase the nature, goals, spirit, or history of the sport, but also enhance team cohesion and a sense of belonging. We will explore the origins, design, and function of sports badges, as well as how to customize a sports badge to suit your individual needs.
Background of sports badges
The origin of sports badges can be traced back to the ancient Greek Games, also known as the Olympic Games. At that time, winning or achieving a ranking was rewarded with an olive wreath or laurel wreath as a symbol of honor (hence the term "laurel wreath"). When the Olympics were held again in 1896, the tradition of awarding medals as prizes officially began. However, not every athlete could win a medal, thus giving rise to sports badges.
Sports badges allow athletes, volunteers, or staff from different countries to exchange badges from each other's countries or sports teams. They can also be distributed or sold in large quantities to spectators participating in sporting events, giving everyone a chance to share in the excitement.

Design and features of sports badges
The design and features of sports badges typically include the following aspects:
- Sports badges reflect the nature, goals, spirit, or history of the sport. For example, the five Olympic rings represent the unity of the five continents, football badges usually feature a football, and marathon badges may feature runners or routes.
- Sports badges use the sports' representative colors, graphics, or symbols, such as the five colors of the Olympic rings, the black and white of a football badge, and the orange of a basketball badge.
- Sports badges will have the name, abbreviation, slogan or motto of the sport, such as "Faster, Higher, Stronger" for the Olympic Games, "FIFA World Cup" for the FIFA World Cup, "42.195 km" for the marathon, etc.
- Sports badges will include the year, location, organizer, or sponsor of the sport, such as "2020 Tokyo" for the Olympic Games, "Qatar 2022" for the FIFA World Cup, and "Taipei City Government" or "Chunghwa Telecom" for the marathon.
Since sports badges are often worn during sports activities, they should be small, delicate, and lightweight. Zinc alloy is one of the best materials for making badges, as it is both durable and lightweight. In addition, the die-casting, electroplating, and coloring techniques used in zinc alloy badges allow for a wide variety of variations and possibilities in their appearance. Therefore, the vast majority of badges use zinc alloy as their main material.

Functions of sports badges
In daily life, the most common type of badges encountered are those from sports clubs. In different school sports clubs, or in sports clubs that are formed by people after graduation, people may create sports badges for their clubs due to the need for identity or a sense of belonging. The main function of the badge is to make it a symbol of the exclusive community and to show their love for the community and the sport.
Sports badges also have other functions, such as:
- Enhance team cohesion and a sense of belonging. Sports badges make team members feel like they are part of a team and share common goals and values. Sports badges can also serve as a medium for communication and interaction among team members, enhancing mutual understanding and trust.
- Enhancing a team's image and reputation. Sports badges provide a unique and distinctive identifier for the team, conveying its characteristics and style. They can also serve as a promotional tool, attracting more supporters and sponsors.
- Sports badges boost team morale and performance. They allow team members to feel that their efforts and achievements are recognized and affirmed, instilling a sense of pride and honor. Sports badges can also serve as a form of reward and encouragement, motivating team members to work harder and improve.
